Ferry Terminal in Ceiba

There is a lot of inaccurate information regarding the Vieques Ferry on the internet, and that is due to the fact that Hurricane Maria destroyed the existing ferry dock.

This is What You Need to Know

  • The ferry dock on the main island operates solely out of Ceiba
  • The ride is smooth on a super fast catamaran and takes about 20 minutes
  • The ferries have double decker seating, both indoor and outdoor
  • Depending on the season, there are multiple ferries a day and schedules change
  • You can pay in cash or credit
  • Advance reservations are no longer allowed
  • There is a designated cargo hold for baggage, or groceries as it were, for the locals
  • No snacking allowed onboard, however, water is acceptable
  • Some ferries also transport cars, though rental cars are not allowed

The hardest decision is where to sit

For Kids: The short Vieques ferry ride in Puerto Rico is a treat for the little ones, especially if you sit outside. We sat on the upper deck on the way out, and the wind was so strong due to the speeds that they played a game of trying to catch it underneath them as they lifted themselves off their seats.

The ferry operators are super strict about standing or going near the rails, so keep an eye on your kids and make sure they are sitting at all times. On the way back to the mainland it was raining, so we had to stay indoors and our kids watched the windows the whole time to see if we the rain would stop so we could head outside.

I don’t know how I got my camera to do this cool effect, but man I look tired

We had so many amazing experiences during our stay on the island of Vieques! Our family played on a magnetic black sand beach, swam with underwater twinkling stars, and saw the aftermath of Hurricane Maria up close and personal!
