Gabriel’s favorite breakfast is biscuits and gravy, and honestly, it took me all of 16 years of our marriage to get it right for him. It was either too salty, or the wrong kind of sausage, or the biscuit wasn’t puffy enough, or I cooked the egg incorrectly. Not typically so hard to please, Gabriel turns into an absolute tyrant when it comes to his favorite breakfast meal. When we heard Stilesboro Biscuits was touted as The Best Southern Breakfast in Atlanta, we definitely weren’t going to pass up the opportunity to satiate our taste buds; even if I risked losing the progress I’d made towards Gabriel appreciating my efforts to be a perfect housewife.

This place is as kitchy as they come. Signs plastered every which way on every wall read along the lines of, “Mirror mirror on the wall, I am my mother after all.” This, combined with pictures of friends, family, congregation members, and patrons on the wall grinning from ear to ear, Stilesboro Biscuits feels like the best version of your Grandmother’s living room. We are proud to also now have a picture of our family grinning ear to ear hanging on the wall of this restaurant.
The restaurant itself is quite small. Located in a log cabin alongside a busy main road just outside of Atlanta, Georgia, it’s painted white and unmistakable for the packed parking lot and satisfied customers coming and going without pause. There are no more than six tables inside the restaurant. All handmade by the owner’s father and grandfather.
Strangers sit together and make friends; they share stories of church choirs and neighborhood parties. We met Jeff K and learned about the best neighborhoods in Atlanta, the best churches to attend and his daughter’s favorite iPhone game.
You can’t leave Stilesboro Biscuits without feeling like you are taking home a little part of the South with you. A little part of the best part of the South. Lynn Herndon opened Stilesboro Biscuits 25 years ago in an effort to pay for her kids college. Now she’s known as The Biscuit Lady. A title that could not be more deserving. She’s even featured in the 10th Edition of Roadfood: An Eater’s Guide to More Than 1,000 of the Best Local Hot Spots and Hidden Gems Across America!
Using the same recipe for both her savory biscuits as her cinnamon rolls, the recipe originally came from the vault where all the best recipes come from: Grandma. Yes, the same buttermilk, layered, melt in your mouth, fluffy raised biscuit recipe for cinnamon rolls. How has this not caught on before now? Even their Facebook page is Buscuits4Ever.
We were the last patrons to leave the restaurant and as a thank you Lynn sent us home with a complimentary bag full of her famous cinnamon rolls. We savored each and every bite later that day!
It’s hard to outdo a biscuit, but can we just talk for a minute about the sausage gravy. We ordered a Chicken biscuit, a sausage patty biscuit and of course, biscuits and gravy. I’d say we all fought over the biscuits and gravy, but we ordered a side of gravy and the portion sizes were so generous there was enough to share between the five of us with only a few tears that some got more gravy than others. It was the perfect balance of heat, spice, cream and thickness.
► For Kids: You can’t go wrong with the best southern breakfast in Atlanta, and Stilesboro Biscuits is ideal for families. Sweet or savory or large or small, plus fair prices, and did we mention the biscuits? The biscuits that promise to fill your entire day with happiness. If anything, kids will love the opportunity to chat and make new friends at this adorable community gathering place.
The menu is perfect in its simplicity. Stilesboro Biscuits knows what is has to offer and doesn’t let anything detract from it. Chose a meat, chose a drink, add extra gravy. It keeps the line moving and the tummy from rumbling.
