Two friends who have lived in Japan warned us about the Okonomiyaki. Warned us that we would love it! It’s an authentic Japanese speciality dish cooked teppanyaki style in a back alley restaurant crammed full of people. The bottom consists of a pancake which is then covered in noodles, vegetables, eggs, meat, soy sauce and anything else you desire. Literally translated it means, ‘How do you like it grilled?”

We had a difficult time locating this particular location. It was unmarked on the elevator and signs inside, and once we did locate the restaurant it seemed too crowded to accommodate us. Not to be dissuaded, we eventually found a seat among the rows and rows and rows of grills forming an L around each cook in every direction.
We made our selections from a picture menu and watched the cook go to work. It was mesmerizing. He slid the food right over to us from the grill, with a spatula. Using the spatula we would cut off a piece and transfer it to our plate so ensure the dish stayed warm throughout the meal. It was delicious! It was a treat we would love to have again and again!
► For Kids: This authentic Japanese restaurant is a treat your kids will love. Determining their tastes it’s up to you to decide as there isn’t a specific children’s menu available, but it’s pretty mild in flavor. Our children thought it was pretty neat though we had to constantly remind them to keep their hands clear of the grill.
Have you eaten Okonomiyaki? Are you hooked? Tell us all about it!
